The interpretation of the reddening of some asteroids' spectra has allowed to develop a procedure for the analysis of hardening of steels. In practice, the phenomenon of reddening, explained by the presence on the asteroids of processis to transform metals into very hard metal alloys, has suggested to transfer the same diagnostics to the terrestrial steels, associating their hardness to the spectrum and introducing a new remote and non-destructive technique.

This methodology has been patented and the idea has received the "K-idea Prize" from the Parco Scientifico Tecnologico Kilometro Rosso.
